Automatic/Manual Sprinkler System

Introduction

The Ship Law issued by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism requires the installation of sprinkler systems in specific areas of coastal vessels.
In the event of fire, the damage on properties and humans could be determined by whether or not prompt and appropriate action can be taken at the initial stage. The sprinkler system is suitable for that purpose, designed to quickly discharge water in concerned areas.

• Automatic sprinkler system
  Wet-pipe sprinklers (the piping is filled with water all the way to the nozzles) are installed in the protected areas and automatically activated upon detection of a fire.
  It is mainly used for accommodation space on passenger ships.
• Manual sprinkler system
  The piping leading to the protected areas is filled with pressurized water up to the valves on it. Manual operation to open any of the valves immediately releases water in the corresponding area.
  It is mainly used for car decks of RO-RO ships.

Features / Advantages

• Automatic sprinkler system
  No operation by the crew is needed for activation.
  Only the sprinklers in the concerned area are automatically activated, minimizing damages on properties in other areas.
  Visual and audible alarm is given upon the activation of any sprinkler to notify the crew where the fire occurs.
  The sprinkler nozzles are set to come into operation at specific temperatures depending on the place to be installed. For example, those in accommodation space get activated at 72℃, those in kitchen at 98℃.
  The nozzles are plugged with a heat-sensitive element which usually prevents water filled in the piping from gushing out, but melts as exposed to heat from fire to release water.
• Manual sprinkler system
  This system requires manual operation by the crew to activate.
  Initial fire-fighting operation can be achieved by manually opening the valve for the concerned area soon after the crew discover a fire.
