Introduction
For the purpose of extinguishing and suppressing fires at early stage, SOLAS convention requires the installation of water-based fire-fighting system for high risk objects in a machinery space (main engine, auxiliary engine, boiler, incinerator, F.O. purifier, and IGG) on ships which keel is laid on and after July 1, 2002.
Recognizing the importance of extinguishing and suppressing a fire before it grows, this rule was enacted based on the analysis of numbers of onboard fire incidents all over the world.
Kashiwa has taken the lead in the industry in conducting safety evaluation tests for the mist against electrical equipment and evaluation tests for the effect of ventilation in a machinery space against the fire-fighting performance. Kashiwa also developed “side-shot system” specifically for fires on main engine, acquiring international acclaim for having played a vital role in putting the system into practical use.
Features / Advantages
The rule requires water-based system neither to present any health hazard to the crew nor to interfere the navigation of the ship.
To meet these requirements, the water-mist system is free from use of any agent or gas, but sprays fine water droplets which are obviously safe to the crew.
System Configuration
The system mainly consists of pump unit (including fresh water pump, pump starter and distribution valves), spray nozzles, control panels and fresh water tank.
Delivery Record
The system has been delivered to approximately 5,000 ships so far.
